Your front door is the main entry point to your home, and thieves know it. The good news is that several simple improvements can make a big difference, whether you are keeping your current door or replacing it.

Check the lock

Modern uPVC and composite doors use multi-point locks that engage with the frame at several points. If your lock is a single old-style cylinder, or the cylinder is exposed, it may be vulnerable. Cylinders rated to a recognised anti-snap standard (look for the TS 007 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond rating) are much harder to attack.

Reinforce the weak points

  • Make sure hinges are in good condition and that hinge bolts or security dog-bolts are fitted on outward-facing hinges.
  • Fit a security letterbox or cage to stop “fishing” for keys or latches.
  • Add a door chain or limiter, and a spyhole or video doorbell so you can see who is outside.

Look at glazing and panels

Laminated glass in door panels is very hard to break through, and many composite doors have glass that is laminated as standard. Avoid leaving keys in the lock, where they could be reached through broken glass.

When to replace

If your door is old, warped or the frame is damaged, upgrading to a tested composite door gives the strongest result, combining a solid core, multi-point locking and good insulation. Talk to us about the options and we will tell you honestly whether you need a new door or just a few improvements.
