Most burglars are opportunists. They look for the easiest way in and move on if a property looks like hard work. Making your home a harder target does not have to cost a fortune, and starts with the basics.

Make every door and window do its job

  • Fit multi-point locking on external doors, which secures the door at several points along its edge.
  • Make sure windows have working locks and that ground-floor and easy-access windows are locked when you go out.
  • Check that handles and locks are not loose or damaged.

Don’t forget the garage

An integral or attached garage can be a route into the house. Keep the door locked and the internal door secure, and replace old, flimsy up and over doors. Modern roller and sectional doors with automatic locking are significantly more secure.

Make it look occupied

  • Use timer switches or smart plugs on lights when you are away.
  • Do not leave valuables or car keys where they can be seen through windows or letterboxes.
  • Keep hedges and fences at the front low enough that the house can be seen from the street.

Add lighting and visible deterrents

Motion-activated lighting, a visible alarm box and a video doorbell all help to discourage opportunists.

Upgrade the weak points

If your doors and windows are old or worn, replacement with tested, accredited products is the single biggest improvement you can make. We can survey your property and advise where upgrades will make the most difference.
