Your front door is the first thing visitors see and one of the easiest ways to change a home’s character. The right colour can lift an entire frontage, so it is worth taking a moment to choose well.
Start with your bricks and surroundings
Look at your brick or render colour, the roof, your window frames and the neighbours. A colour that harmonises with these will almost always look better than one that fights them.
Popular colours and what they say
- Anthracite grey: contemporary, versatile and very popular with modern and traditional homes alike.
- Black: classic and smart, especially on period properties and red brick.
- Deep green or racing green: a timeless, country-house feel that works well with brick and stone.
- Blue: from navy to soft blue-greys, fresh and welcoming.
- Red: bold and cheerful, great as a statement against cream or pale render.
- Cream or white: bright and traditional, with a light, fresh feel.
Practical things to think about
- Dark colours show dust and fingerprints more, but hide dirt well.
- In conservation areas, your council may set limits on colour.
- Choose hardware, such as handles, letterbox and numbers, in a finish that complements the colour.
- Composite doors can be had in a wide choice of factory finishes that will not need repainting.
Try before you commit
Colours look different in daylight and on a large door than on a small sample. Hold up samples against the house at different times of day. We are happy to talk through colours and styles before you decide.
